One Hundred Years of Women’s Suffrage

In 1918, women were finally allowed to vote; equality of suffrage had been achieved. It was not without lengthy struggle on the part of many women and men over many years.
This short play in the historic Lissadell Church, will recreate the events of one of the first suffrage meetings hosted by Eva, Constance and Mabel Gore-Booth in 1896. The Gore-Booths owned Lissadell Estate and this was the sisters’ first foray into the political arena. The story draws directly from newspaper reports of the time and other historical information A discussion about the story of suffrage and women will follow, with Dr Lauren Arrington, co-director of YISS and Dr Fiona Buckley, Dept of Government & Politics, UCC.
